Writers effect- The sleeping giant
The writer begins by describing ‘the depths of the earth’ and how villainously colossal and domineering the cave looked. They then depict how miraculously beautiful the cave was, in the phrase ‘awe-inspiring and almost ethereal.’ which gives an effect of eternal bliss and exhilaration, hence going against their own statement. They then go on to describe the sheer enormity of the cave in the phrase ‘size of a cathedral,’ This shows the reader how immensely gargantuan the cave was, putting things into perspective for them, while the statement that ‘the statue of liberty could easily fit’ does seem a bit exaggerated; it shows the reader just how blown away the writer is by the cave. The sentence ‘Size of three full-sized basketball courts placed next to each other.’ just goes on to describe the gargantuan cave. Moving on from the size of the cave, the writer then goes on to describe the bewitching allure of the cave in ‘The subterranean walls are scorched with colors from a divine palette’ by using the word ‘scorched’ the writer elusively reminds the reader that in this cave, in which they stood right then, was once spewing searing hot lava onto the earth. The words ‘divine palette’ describe the magnitude of the irresistible beauty of the designs on the cave walls. Abandoning all subtlety the writer then shocks the awe-inspired readers with the statement ‘The color intensifies in certain places where 4000 years ago the magma was pushed out with brutal force.’
